For months citizen advocates have been working with Director of Public Works Jennifer Kern and Transportation Planner Nate Keltch on a safety enhancing project. We would like to have micro roundabouts (m@s) installed in urban intersections. The first fruit of this effort is a new roundabout a couple of blocks south of Broadway on 23rd Street. The roundabout’s circumference is larger than that of our vision. We are exploring measures to enhance the aesthetics of the roundabout – perhaps a center art piece or planting.

A second roundabout is planned for the intersection of Speed and Spring north of Bardstown Road. While neither roundabout conforms to the vision of the micro roundabouts (see image), we are grateful for this beginning and look forward to future m@s gracing downtown intersections.

Thank you, Director Kern and Planner Keltch. This is a great complement to the one way to two way street conversions and a good start on the urban m@ vision.

Image of the 23rd Street roundabout will be in the next post.
