A local bike-courier service has purchased a new trailer that can be used to deliver large packages or -- get this -- bodies. Bike Couriers & Bike Couriers Bike Shop wants to use its 8-foot trailer for "families who want their loved ones taken to the cemetery by bicycle (requires lighter weight, environmentally friendly casket)," according to a press release the company sent out recently.

The company also plans to use the trailer to protest when pedestrians and cyclists are killed by vehicles. "Every time a local cyclist or pedestrian is killed, we will carry a faux casket through the streets of Louisville," the release says.

Co-owner Jackie Green said he doesn't know of any other company in the country that uses bicycles as hearses. Metro Councilman Tom Owen, a well-known bicycle commuter, said he hasn't given much thought to whether he wants to be hauled away behind a bike. "I'd rather wait to get a little closer to sunset before I make that decision," he said.
